I’ve just returned from one of the most extraordinary trips of my travel career — and after 30 years in the industry, that’s saying something. Sri Lanka truly lives up to its nickname “The Pearl of the Indian Ocean.” In September 2026 I travelled through this incredible island with my wife, experiencing everything from ancient rock fortresses and spice-scented hill country to leopard sightings on safari and stunning colonial beach towns.
As a travel agent I’ve booked many clients on Sri Lanka tours — but experiencing it first-hand has given me an entirely new perspective. In this guide I’m sharing everything you need to know to plan the perfect Sri Lanka holiday as a New Zealand traveller.
Why Sri Lanka Should Be on Every Kiwi's Bucket List
Sri Lanka is one of those rare destinations that has everything — ancient history, stunning wildlife, lush hill country, pristine beaches, incredible food and warm, welcoming people — all packed into a compact island that’s easy to navigate. Despite being just a short flight from New Zealand via Kuala Lumpur or Singapore, it remains remarkably uncrowded compared to other Asian destinations.
The island offers extraordinary value for money — world-class hotels, incredible food and fascinating experiences at a fraction of what you’d pay in Europe or even parts of Southeast Asia. And the Sri Lankan people are among the most genuinely warm and hospitable I’ve encountered anywhere in the world.
The Perfect Sri Lanka Itinerary — From Colombo to the South Coast
The classic Sri Lanka circuit covers the island’s greatest highlights in a logical route. Here’s the itinerary we followed — and I’d highly recommend it for first-time visitors:
Colombo — Gateway to Sri Lanka
Most visitors arrive into Colombo — Sri Lanka’s vibrant commercial capital. While many travellers rush through, I’d recommend spending at least one night here to recover from the flight and explore the city’s fascinating mix of colonial architecture, buzzing street food markets and excellent restaurants. We stayed at the Courtyard by Marriott which was excellent — central, comfortable and great value.
Habarana/Dambulla — Ancient Wonders
The cultural heartland of Sri Lanka is home to some of the island’s most extraordinary ancient sites. The Dambulla Cave Temple — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — houses five magnificent cave temples filled with hundreds of Buddha statues and ancient frescoes. The surrounding area is also home to incredible wildlife — elephant sightings are common here.
We stayed at the beautiful Amaya Lake Resort & Spa — set on a stunning lake with incredible wildlife right on the doorstep. Waking up to elephants grazing nearby is an experience I won’t forget.
Sigiriya — The Eighth Wonder of the World
This is the absolute highlight of any Sri Lanka trip — and one I’d urge every visitor to experience. Sigiriya is a 5th century rock fortress rising 200 metres from the jungle floor, with ancient frescoes, magnificent gardens and breathtaking 360-degree views from the summit.
I’ll be honest — the climb is steep and takes about 1.5 hours each way. But I would highly recommend it to anyone who is reasonably fit. The views from the top are extraordinary and the sense of achievement is immense. Don’t miss it.
Kandy — Sri Lanka’s Cultural Capital
Kandy is the last royal capital of the ancient kings of Sri Lanka and the cultural heart of the island. Set around a beautiful lake and surrounded by rolling hills, it’s one of the most charming cities in Asia.
The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic — housed within the magnificent Royal Palace complex — is one of Buddhism’s most sacred sites and a must-visit for first-timers. Having visited 39 years ago, I chose to spend my time differently this visit — enjoying the excellent local cuisine at Balaji restaurant and exploring the beautiful Laksala craft centre for Sri Lankan handicrafts and souvenirs. We stayed at the Amaya Hills — a wonderful hilltop property with stunning views over Kandy.
Nuwara Eliya — Sri Lanka’s Little England
High in Sri Lanka’s central highlands, Nuwara Eliya is a charming colonial-era town surrounded by tea plantations. At 1,868 metres above sea level it’s refreshingly cool — a welcome change from the heat of the lowlands. A visit to a working tea factory is essential — Sri Lanka produces some of the world’s finest tea and seeing the process from leaf to cup is fascinating.
We stayed at the Araliya Green City — a beautiful property set in the hills with stunning garden views. Highly recommended.
Yala National Park — Sri Lanka’s Wildlife Jewel
Yala is one of the best places in the world to see leopards in the wild — and Sri Lanka has the highest density of leopards of any national park on earth. An early morning or late afternoon jeep safari through Yala’s varied ecosystems is one of the most thrilling wildlife experiences available anywhere in Asia.
We stayed at Ekho Safari — a wonderful tented camp that puts you right in the heart of the wilderness. Falling asleep to the sounds of the jungle is unforgettable.
Galle and the South Coast — Colonial Charm meets Beach Paradise
The final leg of our journey took us to the stunning south coast. Galle Fort — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — is a beautifully preserved Dutch colonial fortress town with charming boutique shops, excellent restaurants and stunning ocean views from the ramparts.
We finished our trip at the magnificent Heritance Ahungalla — one of Sri Lanka’s finest beach resorts, designed by the legendary architect Geoffrey Bawa. Set on a stunning stretch of beach, it’s the perfect place to decompress after an action-packed itinerary.
Practical Tips for Kiwis Travelling to Sri Lank
Getting there
The easiest routing from New Zealand is via Kuala Lumpur with Malaysia Airlines — we stopped for three nights in KL on the way, which I’d highly recommend as Kuala Lumpur is a fantastic city in its own right. Direct connections are also available via Singapore with SIA.
Best time to visit
Sri Lanka has two monsoon seasons affecting different parts of the island at different times. December to March is generally considered the best time for the south and west coasts, while April to September suits the north and east. However Sri Lanka can be visited year-round — we travelled in September and had a wonderful experience.
Visa requirements
New Zealand passport holders require an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) to enter Sri Lanka. This must be obtained online before travel. As the owner of Visa Assist, I can help arrange this for you — contact us at travel@beyondholidays.co.nz.
Currency
The Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR) is the local currency. Credit cards are widely accepted at hotels and larger restaurants but carry cash for markets, tuk-tuks and smaller establishments.
Health
Consult your doctor or travel health clinic before visiting Sri Lanka. Standard vaccinations and malaria precautions may be recommended depending on your itinerary.
Getting around
A private driver/guide is by far the best way to experience Sri Lanka — comfortable, flexible and excellent value. Your Beyond Holidays tour package will include this as standard.
